Live Cattle Mixed, Feeder Cattle Prices Rise

Live cattle futures were mixed on Thursday, with October closing a tick higher. Feeder cattle futures closed $.375 to $1.30 higher in the front months. The CME Feeder Cattle Index was down 74 cents on August 14 at $139.15. Wholesale boxed beef prices continued their rise on Thursday afternoon. Choice boxes were up another $3.78 at $236.12, with Select boxes $4.75 higher @ $210.67. USDA reported 16,152 MT of beef sold for export in the week that ended on August 8, with shipments at 15,590 MT. The USDA estimated the week to date FI cattle slaughter at 463,000 head, 13,000 head less than the previous week and 11,000 head below the same week last year. That is not as much as initially feared, given the loss of 5,000-6,000 head/day slaughter capacity. A few cash trades have been reported this week, with $105 in the South and $105-106.5 in the North.
